I tried some eco friendly ways to create pigment using berries, tea, turmeric, and dirt. I absolutely love the subtle hues these organic substances yielded.
The beautiful hues in I Need Solitude were created by soaking paper towels in mashed strawberries and blueberries and turmeric mixed with a little water. After each piece dried I dipped the edges back into the pigment.
I used a DYI paste by mixing equal parts flour and water. Apparently, my grandmother used this technique during the depression. Who could afford glue back then?
In The Silver Lining, I used turmeric to dye the cheesecloth used for the woman’s hair. The brown around the perimeter is mud applied with my fingertip.
Tea stained paper towels support a natural feeling in this piece, Set Me Free.
